Time to Apply Bursary and scholarship
May 5, 2009 - 11:02pm MST |
Applications for the AUPE bursary program must be filed between May 1 and June 30.
Applications will be accepted from members in good standing with two consecutive years of membership, their spouses and financial dependents, as well as from financial dependents of retired or deceased members within 10 years of retirement or death.
Applications will also be considered from past members who enroll full-time in educational institutions within one year of their job being eliminated.
AUPE bursaries are awarded from a fund based on students’ financial need. The number and size of awards, based on interest generated by the fund, will be determined by the Education Sub-Committee of the AUPE Members’ Benefits Committee.
In addition to the bursary program, AUPE awards a $2,500 annual scholarship in memory of Brent Gawne, who for many years served as AUPE’s lawyer.
To qualify for this year’s Brent Gawne Memorial Scholarship, applicants must submit an essay of 2,000 or more words, which will be judged by a qualified adjudicator. The essay question this year asks: "Is the health of a province measured by its wealth, or is the wealth of a province measured by its health?"
Completed applications for the scholarship will also be accepted only from May 1 until June 30.
